Abstract

Dendrobium orchid is a popular ornamental plant because it has beautiful flowers. One of the ways to enhance dendrobium orchid quality is by selecting planting media and varieties which are appropriate with the growing environment. This study aims to determine the effect of different types of planting media and varieties on the growth of dendrobium orchid plants in the drip irrigation system. This study was conducted on December 2019 until February 2020 at Orchid Nambangan Garden, Sidomulyo Village, Candimulyo District, Magelang Regency. It was at an altitude of ± 304 meters under sea level. This study was conducted with the factorial experiment (2x5) that was arranged in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications as blocks. The first factor was the planting media: Kadaka root and Industry Rockwool. The second factor was dendrobium varieties: Transient White Berryl (BER), Dark Brown Lilac (LLC), Verus Yellow Anya (ANY), Dark Purple Birney (BRY), Verus Yellow Veronia (VRO). The data obtained were analyzed by analysis of variance and continued with the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test for the first factor and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) for the second factor. The result of the experiments shows that Kadaka Root media give a better impact than  Industry Rockwool for the parameter of plant height growth, number of leaves, and leaf chlorophyll. There are differences among five dendrobium varieties that were tried in all of the observational parameters. There is an interaction between planting media with dendrobium orchid varieties. Dark Purple Birney and Verus Yellow Anya, two varieties of dendrobium orchid, which are grown on Industry Rockwool media have the highest number of bulbs.
