Abstract

The welding process is one of the most important processes in industry manufacture. Welding is one of the metal joining techniques by partially melting the parent metal and filler metal with or without pressure and with or without a metal addition and produces a continuous connection. The shape of the SMAW weld seam can affect the tensile strength of the material. The material used in this research is AISI 1045 Steel plate with dimensions of 30 mm x 30 mm x 10 mm. The shape of the seam used in this study was single V seam, I seam and U seam. The results of the tensile strength test on the specimen against the variation of the seam showed that the tensile strength of the double V SMAW welded seam had a higher tensile strength, which was 499 ,97 N/mm2 compared to the I and U seam. Based on these results, it is shown that the SMAW welded seam with V shape has a greater strain. Then followed by U and V shape. From the observation of microstructure, the value of V seam is greater than that of I and U seam. Due to the properties of pearlite grains, which are stronger, harder and less brittle. Meanwhile, the percentage of ferrite structure displayed is increasing with its soft and ductile nature which makes the strength of the material stronger than those with more pearlite grains.
