Abstract

The development and progress of materials science in the industrial world is currently growing rapidly. AISI 1015 steel is one type of metal that has been widely used as the main material in the automotive world. One of them is motorcycle wheels. However, the problem that is often encountered is the limitation in terms of corrosion resistance because motorcycle wheels are directly related to the corrosive environment, namely water and oxygen. One way to increase the corrosion of AISI 1015 steel is to provide a base metal coating using the electroplating method. Electroplating is the process of coating metal using an electric current so that the deposition of protective metal ions occurs. In this study, a variation of the voltage of 3 volts, 4 volts, and 5 volts will be used for nickel copper electroplating. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of electric voltage on corrosion rate and hardness value. The methods used are: corrosion rate testing using potentiodynamic polarization and hardness testing using Vickers hardness test. The results showed that the corrosion rate of raw material was 10.227 mpy, a voltage of 3 volts was 1.713 mpy, a voltage of 3 volts was 0.628 mpy and a voltage of 5 volts was 0.662 mpy. The results of the hardness value are at a voltage of 3 volts, an average of 147.188 VHN is obtained, an average of 4 volts is 155.522 VHN, and an average of 5 volts is 159.4 VHN. The higher the stress, the lower the corrosion rate and the higher the hardness value.
